About Us

“When cancer is no more, there is less need for a cure.”

The National Breast Cancer Prevention Project/Know Breast Cancer is a non-profit education and political change organization for people who want to finally end this national epidemic. Please join with us and help stop breast cancer before it starts as we change the conversation from fear to knowledge.

The Old Conversation

Be afraid; we really don’t know what causes breast cancer; we believe it can strike anyone at any time. The only way to prevent you from dying an early death from breast cancer is to get an annual screening mammogram. Hopefully we will soon find the cure; Give us more money.

The New Conversation

Stay calm and become knowledgeable. Since genetics is involved in less than 10% of breast cancer cases, we can say that 90% -100% of breast cancer is somehow preventable. We now know a lot more about possible, probable and known risk factors that together create unique recipes producing different kinds of breast cancer in individual women at different points in a woman’s life.

Here are some research-based known and probable risk factors. Air and water pollution; pesticides; prescription drugs with hormones; added hormones in our meat, eggs, dairy products; cosmetics, body care products and plastics containing parabens, fragrance, phthalates and 1000 other known and probable carcinogenic ingredients; a lack of vitamin D; low melatonin levels; a weakened immune system, a lack of daily exercise; too much body fat if you are post menopausal and all kinds of radiation.

We can each take dozens of daily steps to help prevent breast cancer in ourselves and in others. We just need to be educated about the probable and known causes of breast cancer.

Screening mammograms do not PREVENT breast cancer. Screening mammograms can sometimes DETECT tumors that may have been growing for the past 30 years or for the past 13 months.

The Problem

There is no money in prevention.

Hundreds of millions of tax dollars and pink ribbon private dollars are spent each year urging women to have screening mammograms to detect breast cancer, but, virtually no money is ever spent helping women understand how and why 90% -100% of breast cancer is actually preventable.

Billions of dollars are spent in the U.S. each year on research to develop new commercial treatment and “prevention” drugs and new commercial radiation and commercial surgical procedures to screen and treat breast cancer more effectively or extend the duration of life. Sadly, however, virtually none of this money is being spent on figuring out and talking about which cosmetics, foods, drugs, pesticides, radiation and chemicals are now causing breast cancer to happen in the first place.

The United States therefore continues to have the highest breast cancer rates in the world. Our younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer in unprecedented numbers. While our cancer treatment industry is reaping record-breaking profits, our private health insurance premiums and co-pays are at record breaking highs. The U.S. government refuses to pass breast cancer prevention laws, apparently putting the profit interests of chemical, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and agribusiness companies before people’s cancer prevention needs.

This year in the United States, 40,000 mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and friends will die from breast cancer and 240,000 mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and friends will receive a first diagnosis of invasive or in situ breast cancer.

The Solution

We urge grassroots women to urge your local Komen, Avon and American Cancer Society chapters to begin to support national pro prevention groups such as Breast Cancer Fund, Silent Spring Institute, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and The Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors at Cornell University. These important groups and others in CHE’s Working Group on Breast Cancer continue to be virtually ignored by government funders and by major breast cancer awareness organizations.

These pro-prevention groups also need financial support from as many individuals as possible. These are the nonprofit groups that are continuing to do the hard pioneering work of figuring out which pesticides, food additives, air and water pollutants, drugs, occupations, etc. are together forming the perfect storms that are now creating all types of breast cancers.

Finally, we are asking the US Government to support its citizens by passing breast cancer prevention laws, similar to those laws now enjoyed by the European Union and to pass the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S.579/H.1157) as a small first step to acknowledging that 90% to 100% of breast cancer is preventable.
